Tiered for Success: Platform Updates That Support MTSS Alignment

Platform Updates: Tier 2 and Tier 3 Intervention

We’ve updated the names of the powerful intervention tools in NextGenMath.com previously called Blended Learning and Individualized Learning to to make it easier for users to identify next steps for supporting students after Tier 1 instruction. You'll now see them labeled as Tier 2 Intervention and Tier 3 Support.

Read on to learn more about how to use NextGenMath.com to support all your math-related MTSS efforts.

How Next Gen Math Supports MTSS

As a supplemental curriculum, NGM is designed for flexibility. Whether you're filling curriculum gaps, differentiating instruction, or enriching high-achieving learners, NGM offers tools and resources that align beautifully with MTSS goals.

Pinpointing Learning Gaps with Actionable Data

To support Tier 2 and 3 students effectively, the first step is knowing who they are. NextGenMath.com helps educators and administrators identify student learning gaps and determine which students would benefit from Tier 2 or Tier 3 support. Instead of waiting for quarterly assessments, you can identify struggling students in real time from regular classroom work, and therefore intervene much earlier.

In addition to assignment results, the platform has dynamic reports that can help to both identify students who are struggling and monitor their progress. Reports can be filtered by Learning Groups, allowing teachers and administrators to track the effectiveness of Tier 2 and 3 interventions over time.

Here are some best practices for how you can use NGM across the three tiers of support:

Tier 1: Universal Support

Tier 1 support is all about providing strong, standards-aligned instruction for all students—and Next Gen Math is built for just that. Whether you're introducing new concepts, reinforcing key skills, or checking for understanding, there are many ways to use NGM in full-class instruction. Here are just a few of our favorite Tier 1 strategies:

Standards-Based Activities: Use the Standards Builder to create whole-class lessons, practice assignments, exit tickets, and assessments.

Formative & Summative Assessments: Push out Target Practice or Domain Assessments to monitor understanding and fuel PLC conversations.

School-Wide Incentives: Many administrators assign regular Principal’s Challenges as a universal opportunity for engagement and recognition.

Tier 2: Targeted Support

An important aspect of Tier 2 support is flexibility. Who is getting the interventions and what supports they are receiving need regular monitoring. Real-time data from formative assessments—like class activities and practice assignments—and summative tools such as Domain Assessments can help you quickly identify each student’s specific needs. Once you have the data, here are some ways to use Next Gen Math to provide targeted, meaningful support.

Tier 2 Intervention tool: Instantly group students based on specific assignment results to provide:

Extra practice for students who need reinforcement

Challenge assignments for those ready to move ahead

Enable the Collaborative Features –such as vocabulary and instructional video options– so students can work with their peers while you support small groups.

Progression Playlist: Found within the Standards Builder, this tool helps you find the standards that lead to or build from your current focus. It’s especially useful for Tier 2 support, allowing you to tailor small group instruction for students who need targeted review or a strategic push ahead—without losing sight of the learning trajectory.

Summer School/Intervention Program: The Next Gen Math Summer School program will soon be available as a ready-to-use Intervention & Acceleration resource. Designed for flexibility, it can be implemented in SPED settings, intervention classes, before- or after-school tutoring, or any targeted Tier 2 group where students need focused instruction and a boost in confidence.

Tier 3: Intensive Support

When students need more than small-group intervention, Tier 3 provides responsive, individualized instruction designed to close specific gaps. With Next Gen Math, educators can quickly assign targeted activities and seamlessly collaborate with interventionists, SPED case managers, and other support staff—all in real time. The platform makes it easy to personalize instruction and stay aligned across teams.

Tier 3 Support tool: Assign personalized practice based on student results. Each assignment targets only      the skills the student needs to strengthen.

These assignments are 1:1 Support ready and ideal for working with interventionists, SPED case managers, tutors, or any support staff providing individualized support.

Seamless Collaboration: Next Gen Math allows real-time collaboration between teachers and interventionists. Assignments, student data, and Learning Groups can be shared across support staff, making it easy to deliver personalized instruction that adapts to each student’s evolving needs.
