Welcome back!
New performance tasks
We sure hope you had a great summer vacation. Kevin spent his summer installing solar panels in his neighborhood. His efforts inspired our latest suite of performance tasks: Solar Power. You can access the documents for K-8th from the Performance Tasks page.
Navigating real-world challenges with performance tasks
At the heart of our educational approach lies a dynamic tool — performance tasks. These tasks serve as a litmus test for students' ability to apply mathematical standards to solve authentic, real-world predicaments.
In the realm of performance tasks, students encounter scenarios that beckon them to wield their mathematical prowess. These scenarios are more than mere problems; they are gateways to the application of math. While the challenges posed may seem intricate, the mathematical concepts they involve often trace back to standards learned in previous grades.
Here's the key: the SBAC assessment evaluates Mathematical Practice through Claims 2–4. Exposure to performance tasks empowers students with the readiness to conquer this assessment. Remarkably, the science based grade-level topics interlink seamlessly across the grades K–8. This synergy facilitates vertical articulation — a seamless progression of skills.
We understand that some students might face hurdles in reading comprehension. To cater to these needs, we extend the option of using the prior grade's performance task. Rest assured, this choice doesn't compromise exposure to the standards for math practice; it ensures a robust foundation.
New 1st grade geometry stems
A fresh batch of geometry stems have been added to first grade, which prepares students for more complex geometric thinking in later grades. These questions address partitioning circles and rectangles into equal parts and introduce the language to describe such partitions (e.g. halves, fourths, and quarters).
These stems build upon 1.G.2, K.G.1, K.G.2, K.G.3, and K.G.6, and they build up to 2.G.3.
Printing assignments in columns
We are excited to introduce a new feature: multi-column printing for the standards practice and procedural fluency assignments. With this enhancement, you now have the flexibility to select either a one- or two-column layout for standards. For Procedural Fluency, you can take advantage of up to six columns, allowing for even more efficient and organized printing. This added versatility empowers you to tailor your printing preferences.
Guiding the way with Domain Assessments
Get a smart start on your math instruction this year by leveraging NextGenMath.com's Domain Assessments to chart the course. Begin by administering the previous grade's assessment — e.g., 4th grade summative for 5th graders. Carefully analyze the results to pinpoint the areas where students excel and those that might require a quick review. Seamlessly incorporate these valuable insights into your curriculum for the current year. It's an effortless way to enhance your teaching strategy and set a solid foundation for the rest of the year.
To Access Domain Assessments:
1. Pick the prior year's grade level
2. Click Domain Assessment in the left navigation bar
3. Select "Assign" on the domain of choice
4. Click "Add All"
5. Select "Create Assignment"
Before embarking on new territories, it's essential to mold a comprehensive review of previously covered material. This strategic approach lays the groundwork for a smoother transition into uncharted territory. By revisiting and reinforcing prior content, you fortify the foundation upon which new knowledge will be built.
Furthermore, infuse your educational journey with data-driven guidance. Leverage insights garnered from student performance to steer your instruction in a purposeful direction. This analytical perspective allows you to fine-tune your teaching methods, ensuring that each step taken aligns with the progress of your students. By incorporating both review and data-driven strategies, you streamline the path to success, equipping your students with a robust understanding that prepares them to conquer new challenges with confidence.
