Written Instructions:
Next Gen Math supports a secure browser powered by Respondus LockDown Browser.
Teacher Instructions:
Step 1: Assignment Settings Page
From your assignment settings page, you will select all of the options and instructional supports you’d like for this assignment.
At the bottom of the page, you will see a section titled, “Sharing & Security.” Turn the “Secure Browser” toggle to the on position.
Step 2: Optional Password
You can provide an optional Exit Password.
With a password:
- Enter the password in the box.
- Students or a proctor must enter the password before they can leave the assignment. This would allow a student to temporarily step away from the assignment.
- With a password, students will not be able to close the assignment before it is completed.
With no password:
- Leave this section blank if you do not want an exit password.
- Without one, they can close or exit at any time.
Step 3: Advanced Options
The Advanced section is typically used for assessments that are being taken in a computer lab or other environment that requires certain programs to stay running. The lockdown browser will force students to close any applications that may compromise the session’s integrity, such as screen sharing programs and calculators.
The allow list can be used for specific applications that are allowed to operate while students are in the assignment, while the blocklist ensures others remain closed.
If you are having difficulty with this section, reach out to your IT department.
Step 4: Push out the assignment to students.
Student Instructions:
Step 1: Finding the Assignment
When a student logs in to their platform, they will see a list of their incomplete assignments. Any assignment that requires a secure browser will have a red key icon next to the title. The student will click on the assignment and then click “start.”
Step 2: Download the Secure Browser
Note: This step only needs to be completed once per device and can be completed by students or remotely by an IT Department. If students do not have the proper persmissions to download apps, please have IT contact NGM support at: support@nextgenmath.com.
Before downloading, students will need to open, read and check the box for the Terms and Agreements.
Choose from which type of device they are using–Windows, Mac, iPad, or Chromebook.
Save the app to the device, following the browser steps.
Step 3: Entering a Locked Assignment
Before launching an assignment, it is recommended that students use the “test browser” button to verify that their system meets the requirements to launch the assignment.
Once this test is passed, students can then click “Launch LockDown Browser” and be taken to the assignment. The next time a student has a locked assignment, they will be able to click the launch button without downloading the browser.
Step 4: Completing the Assignment
Once in the assignment, students are unable to open any other applications or windows. They are also unable to minimize the window to access any other information on their device. Note that student results, if made available to students, must also be opened in the lockdown browser.
If a password is set to exit, a student, teacher, or proctor must enter the password in order to exit an incomplete assignment. To enter the password, click the white information icon in the upper left-hand side of the screen.
Next, click "Proctor Password."
Have the teacher or proctor enter the password:
Once an assignment is complete and submitted, students can exit the assignment without a password.
